KRIV FOX 26 first went on the air as KVRL in August 1971 but soon changed its call letters to KDOG. During its early days in Houston, Channel 26 aired a wide variety of programs in both English and Spanish.It was May 1978 when Metromedia bought the channel and changed its call letters to what it is known as today — KRIV. The call letters were based off the name of
one of the company’s executives.
In 1983, KRIV started its first newscast and diversified its programming with more high profile shows consisting of entertainment and information. Just three years later, the station was purchased by its current owner, and KRIV became one of the first stations in the FOX television network. It was at this time in 1986 that KRIV became known as FOX 26.
